Students from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences wow distinguished panel of judges
Langenfeld, Germany – June 26, 2013 – International business intelligence software provider arcplan is pleased to announce the winners of the arc|ademy BI Challenge 2013, a contest for university students in the DACH region. Two IT students from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences bested the competition, thanks to their outstanding ideas in the categories Fast Mover (solutions that have been developed in a short time span or can be deployed quickly) and Business Excellence (applications that aim to improve the quality of business decisions). The award-winners were selected by an expert panel of judges, which included Dr. Wolfgang Martin, a leading European analyst, Hans Peter Wolff, arcplan's CTO, and representatives from the media, arcplan customer Deutsche Telekom, and arcplan partners Ernst & Young and Deloitte. Each award carries a prize of 5,000 Euros.
The Fast Mover award went to Tobias Oberley. His application "Fuel Change – Fuel through the Ages" was built on arcplan Enterprise 7 and supports users in choosing the right vehicle. The application maps the development of fuel prices, provides information on the average gas consumption of automobiles, and calculates costs for distances traveled. The solution also features interfaces to online map services, which enable users to call up the most cost-efficient routes. In the category Business Excellence, Maximilian Blau successfully won over the panel of judges. The "somingo Management Dashboard," which is also built on arcplan Enterprise 7, combines social media data, information about competitors, sales figures and other financial data such as EBITDA in the form of a market analysis and, in doing so, helps enterprises make better decisions. One particularly impressive feature involves data such as stock prices and Facebook comments being stored automatically via PHP scripts in the online database of somingo.
"This year we were again pleasantly surprised by the diversity and range of the entries submitted," said Achim Röhe, VP Professional Services at arcplan. "In the years ahead, business intelligence will take on an even greater significance in enterprises. For this reason, it is important to introduce students to BI now and give them a chance to practice creating applications. The BI Challenge re-affirms for us every year that universities are a seat of outstanding and talented minds."
The arc|ademy BI Challenge is designed to allow students to build practical and creative web-based applications with arcplan software. The company awards prizes in the categories Business Excellence, Fast Mover and Innovation. This year, none of the applications submitted met the high standards of the of judges in the Innovation category.
This year's winners will present their ideas in early October at arc|twenty, arcplan's customer and partner forum marking the company's 20th anniversary. Following the success of past years, the BI Challenge will also be continued in 2014. Details on this will be posted soon on www.arcplan.com.
