Daimler Uses arcplan to Complement SAP R/3 to Meet R&T Division’s Complex Planning and Production Challenges

The Research and Technology (R&T) division at Daimler is responsible for technologies, products, and processes within the group. Daimler’s long-term success depends on the ability of the R&T Group to anticipate trends, demand and engineer vehicles that perform and sell well. Company executives, boards of directors and managers all need access to portions of the data and require different analysis.   It is important for the management to be able to look at the dependencies among the many processes; therefore a unified, intuitive, user-friendly management information system is necessary. Relevant data should be current, real-time and placed in the context, meaning it should be tied to a process or performance metric. People who do not have much time to find required information must have a quick and easy way to locate and analyze important information.

For the Daimler implementation, arcplan worked with SAP and built the arcplan analytics solution to ensure the following:

  • System would be seamlessly integrated into the existing IT structure, especially SAP R/3
  • Data regarding research programs, locations, divisions and projects are presented in a consistent manner, and the system provides the ability to drill down for further analysis
  • System would roll up financial and specific HR information
  • Solution work well among many divisions and locations
  • Data be available in near real time
  • Early warning system shows discrepancies so that management may act
"We used to have very frequent misunderstandings in the interpretation of certain concepts that were understood different ways by different departments. Since the implementation of arcplan, this is a problem of the past."

Ulrich Niessen, arcplan Project Sponsor at Daimler
